Censorship Reflection

Directions:  If you would like to respond to this prompt as one of your blog posts, you need to answer all questions below.

  1. List ten books you have read.  If you can’t think of ten, list books you have either heard about or seen the movie version.
  2. Look at your list of ten books.  Write down any reason you think people might want to ban or censor each work.  Reasons could include (but are not limited to) social, political, or religious content, profanity, sexual situations or identities, or violence.
  3. Are there any authors you can think of that have never had their books banned?  Explain your reasoning (hint:  you have all read something by this author in school).
  4. How would life be different if there were no books? Would things be better or worse? Why? Would life be easier or harder? Why? Would your life change? How?  Respond in 5-7 thoughtful sentences.

These things hidden, Speak, catalyst, twisted, along for the ride, dreamland, beastly, the clique, The luxe, pretty little liars.
2.These things hidden has to do with murder, and not being fit in. Speak is about rape. Dreamland is about abusive relationships. Pretty little liars is just a bad series in general but once you start you can't stop.
    3. William shakspeare. His plays/sonnets are the most refrenced plays/sonnets in the world. They show bad themes bad the good person always wins in the end.
    4. WORSE: I love to read, i read all the time and read about 5 books a week. My life would be boring if we didn't have books just for the face that i read for fun and during my free time. I think banning books is just a really horrible idea. We learn form books. How would we read?

    List of 10 books:
    Speak
    Twilight
    New Moon
    Eclipse
    Breaking Dawn
    These Things Hidden
    The Scarlet Letter
    M or F
    Pretty Little Liars
    Harry Potter

    2. These Things Hidden would probably be banned. In the book the themes of murder and suicide are shown. In Speak, the main character is raped. In the book M or F the topic of stolen and sexual identity are talked about numerous times.

3.William Shakespeare. His works are probably the most referenced and most read in highschools no a day.

    4. If there were no books in our society, I think people would be stupid. Books share knowledge and without knowledge people have no book smarts. I think life would be hared because there wouldn't be any dictionaries, a thesaurus, and there wouldn't be instruction manuals. I think the world would be way less civilized and we wouldn't have half of our technology.

    1. Ten books I have read/heard about/seen the movie version of are:
    • Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul
    • Twilight
    • New Moon
    • A Streetcar Named Desire
    • A Child Called “It”
    • The Scarlet Letter
    • The Great Gatsby
    • Dear John
    • The Last Song
    • A Million Little Pieces

    2. I think if I had to choose a few of the books listed above that would be at risk of being banned or censored it would be A Child Called “It” and A Million Little Pieces. The first involves abuse, both physically and emotionally and it’s really painful and unbelievable to read. It kind of depresses you which makes it difficult to read at times. The latter deals with alcohol and drug addiction which is relevant to real life, but some may not agree with the ways the main character gets sober and cleans up his act. It’s a rough and tough story to be told, but I feel it could inspire people to turn their life around for the better.

    3. William Shakespeare is an author who hasn’t had his works banned. I believe this is because not only is his work amazing and well-written, but it’s also because of the fact that his writing is a good example of how literature was back in the day, in his time, and how it’s evolved and changed today, for better or for worse. It just depends on how you look at it. His stories are also interesting and the characters he’s created are very well-developed and interesting to read about. His plot lines are intense and they are a good example of well written works. Dr. Seuss hasn’t had any of his works banned, either. But, I’m guessing it’s because there isn’t really anything vulgar and inappropriate mentioned in his books. They teach children a lot about morals and outlooks on life and allow them to expand their imagination.

    4. Life would be extremely different if books weren’t around. If no books existed, then people would be forced to use their imagination a lot more and share orally what they’ve come up with. Life might be a little harder for some people since some turn to books as an escape or a form of entertainment—to get rid of their boredom. My life wouldn’t be as impacted as others, but I would miss having them around… to read, to refer to, to discuss… books are amazing. I enjoy reading so I could be biased saying that a lot of people would be impacted by the loss of books, but at the same time, it is true. The world would be weird without books.

    1. Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn, Thirteen Reasons Why, Pretty Little Liars, The Last Song, Dear John, How to Train your Dragon, Gossip Girl
    2. People might want to ban the book Thirteen Reasons Why. It deals with suicide and how people are the reason one girl died and it probably sends a bad message. Schools might want to ban Gossip Girl (and the rest of the series) because it deals with kids in high school doing drugs, drinking alcohol, and sleeping around.
    3. I would think William Shakespeare has had anything banned. Most people know about what he writes and he is a go-to example of learning in school
    4. Without books in the world there wouldn’t be as much freedom and imagination. I think life would be harder because we learn a lot from books. I love reading so I might get bored more often. There might not be as smart of people in the world because reading opens you up to different genres and culture.

    1)

    • A Streetcar Named Desire
    • The Great Gatsby
    • Twilight
    • The Color Purple
    • Harry Potter
    • New Moon
    • Eclipse
    • The Outsiders
    • Diary of Anne Frank
    • Cooking Books

    2) The Outsiders, should be banned because it talks about getting into street fights between gangs and there is knifes involved. Also people die and kids run away. Diary of Anne Frank should be also be banned because in the book Jewish people are killed and tortured. It also has racial discrimination.
    3) William Shakespeare has not had any of his books banned because in his book whenever something is sexual he hides it with what is going on the play, whenever there is fighting he makes it be classical and ect.
    4) Life would be different if their would be no books because in the past people used books to pass information to their children, also in the past books could only be written if the information was fact. Life would be harder because some people write about their life or to relive stress. Also we would also be harder because not as many people would be able to read or write. My life would be different because in school we would have no more book reviews to do, or any other sort of reading assignments.

1.) Ten books I have read/heard about/seen the movie version of are:
    • The Holy Bible
    • Harry Potter
    • Pretty Little Liars
    • Are you there vodka? It’s me Chelsea
    • Hush Hush
    • Twilight
    • New Moon
    • The Catcher in the Rye
    • Impulse
    • Identical

2.) My list of 10 books might have reasons for people to ban or censor the work of them because there’s unreal, mystical, magic, sex, violence, bad language, and death (suicide). For The Bible, people’s beliefs or atheists could be against all the religious content. In Harry Potter, there’s magic and witchcraft. In the books Impulse and Identical, there’s suicide, teenagers’ bad thoughts against life, drug use/abuse, violence, and sexual content. These thrilling stories are something that people might consider to be “not a good read for teenagers.” Books like Hush Hush, Twilight, and New Moon could be wanted to be banned or censored because of all the unreal and supernatural things there is in them.

3.) The only author that I’ve heard of, that hasn’t been banned is William Shakespeare. I think his work hasn’t been banned because it’s been taught throughout many schools with never having there be a problem up to this day.

4.) If there were no books, life would definitely be different! Reading is some people’s hobby and many people enjoy it! If there were no books, books for education, math books, textbooks, dictionaries/thesauruses, atlases, and entertainment books wouldn’t exist. This would be horrible because books make a great reference for learning and knowledge. They help us with school too! I think it’d make things worse for us because all books are in some way educational. It’d be hard to learn without having this kind of reference to rely on. Life would change for us all because books are important to everyone’s life (like it or not). My life would change because I love reading, and because I wouldn’t have this kind of source for school help and for me to become a better reader and writer.

  9. Dolores Flores;
    1. A Tale of Two Sisters
    Scribble of Dreams
    Speak
    The Outsiders
    Don’t Take Love Laying Down
    Annie’s Baby
    Taking Care of John
    Knight
    Twilight
    Diary of A Wimpy Kid

    2. A Tale of Two Sisters is about a girl who gets anorexia and family issues. A Scribble of Dreams has murder and betrayal. Speak involves rap and being shunned. The Outsiders had violence and murder. Annie’s Baby and Taking Care of John have to do with teen parenting. Knight is about the holocaust.
    3. William Shakespeare has not had a booked banned. I think it is because he was creating words as he went along. His work had many ways people could interpret it. Besides that he shows how language used to be back then in history.
    4. Life without books would be worse. Now a day’s people just go to the internet to get information they need. But honestly anyone can post something on the internet and millions of people would believe it because it is the first thing that pops up on Google. Whiles things that are published for example textbooks have liable information. Books give us information that we probably wouldn’t be able to get from somewhere else. I know my life would change because I do like to read when things interest me.
