  2. Why do the Olinka not identify with Samuel, Corrine, and Nettie on the basis of race?
  3. Do Celie’s letters to God and her letters to Nettie have a different feel to them or do they seem the same?  What do you think of Celie’s habit of ending her letters to Nettie with “Amen”?
  4. What role do you think Sofia plays in the novel? Describe her character and how she contributes to the themes in the book.
  5. Why do you think Celie’s husband hid Nettie’s letters rather than destroying them?  Does this choice say anything about who he is as a person?
  6. Is the story believable to you?  Why or why not?  Does believability matter to you in a “real-life” type of book?
  7. Has there been a part of the book that haunts you?  Which part(s)?  Why?

    7. The part of the book that really disturbed me was when Shug and Celie were talking about lady parts. The way that it went into detail and the way that they were so open about it weirded me out.

    4. I think that Sofia played a large role in the novel. She put Harpo in his place and she taught Celie how to be a strong woman. The way that Sofia held herself and acted when Harpo decided to beat her really spoke a lot about her character. SHe is a strong and powerful woman.

    5. I think that Mr.____ hid the letters rather than destroying them because he has some form of respect for her. Even though it may be very very small and almost non existent, I think he does have some bit of care for her.

4). I think Sofia plays the role of a woman with strong character, and self confidence because unlike the other girl characters Sofia actually stands up for herself. Sofia is a strong woman because when Harpo tries to beat her she doesn’t allow him to, she actually stands out for herself and fights back. Unlike Celie, Sofia knows better than to let her husband put a hand on her, she defends herself and gives him what he deserves for trying to be like his father.
6). This story is believable to me; because during the time this story took place there was a lot of discrimination towards women. Believability does matter to me in a “real-life” type of book, because that’s what makes the story interesting and get the reader more hooked into the book then an unbelievable book.
7). Yes, there has been a part in the book that haunts me. I would say the beginning of the book haunts me the most because of what Celie’s dad does to her. I find that very disturbing because for a father to do that to their own daughter that just isn’t right.

7, The part that "haunts me" is when Shug is telling Celie how she is still a virgin because of her button, that part of the book is weird and the "hints of lesbianism" were really awkward for me also.
    5. Him hiding Netties letters i feel like is a way for him to get back at nettie for leaving and Celie for having to marry her instead of her sister. It's like he hates them both but still wants to remember that one part of Nettie.
    4. Sophia to me is the way every woman should be, she's a strong, very self relient person who doesn't put up with peoples crap. She's very independednt and leaves when things get bad. I have a lot of respect for her

    6) I think that the book I believable because these themes usually show up on TV or on the news so they are going on. Also they wrote the book in a way that was interesting and believable because she is talking to god and not just telling it from a third person point of view. Not only was it hard for woman but she was a Black women.

    7) Something that haunts me in the book is probably celie life overall this girl is going to be haunted for the rest of her life, she has been abused by the people that were suppose to be there for her and that are suppose to love her. I don’t think she has anyone.

    5) I think that the reason that Celies husband hid the notes and not destroy them is because he cared about her. I think that that he is not that bad of a person.

1.Mr. _____’s relationship with his dad I think is stranded and they don’t communicate about real issues. I think Harpo and Mr._____ have a better relationship. I think they value each others opinions.
3.I think the letters to God and Nettie are pretty similar. She tells what happens in her life and lets them know how she is. I think she ends the letters with amen to show that she does still care about God.
5.I think Celie’s husband understood that it would be mean to destroy the letters so he kept them. I think he kept them so he could eventually show her. It shows that deep down he can be a good person

    4. I think Sofia’s role is major because she stood up for herself no matter what kind of trouble she could get into. She was always confident and didn’t put a man’s word first than her owns. Her strength to her personality isn’t accepted for a woman to have in the time period, but she managed to keep being herself. This however did cause her to lose her husband and have given herself a harder life. The reason she lost her husband was because instead of him hitting her, she did when he tried to. Sofia wasn’t a good woman according to the time period, but she was very independent and shows that not all women were always quiet and afraid like Celie.
    5. The Color Purple is actually believable to me now that I know some of the background information of the time period, but it is crazy how it’s said to be right. The way Celie explained her story too was believable because of the way she worded herself in thought of what was happening to her. Believability does matter to me in a “real-life” type of book because if it happened, it needs to have that realistic feel and the right word usage to make it seem like it happened the way it’s explained.

    7. The part that haunts me is the way Celie gave detailed/graphic information about the things that were happening to her. The way she was open about it to just put it out there made it have too much information that it did make me feel weird while I was reading it. The parts that will haunt me are her first letter of when she’s being raped by her own dad and her sexual intimacy with her husband and Shug.

  8. 4) I think Sofia plays a big role in this book. She has self-confidence, and she is a strong female, because she does not let other men get in her way, she knows how to stand up for herself. When Harpo tries to hit her she does not let him because she does not let men or anyone control her, unlike Celie that does whatever her husband says and allows him to hit her. I can say that Nettie and Celie are opposite when it comes to standing up for themselves. She helps support the theme of how woman gain their power over men.

    5) I think that Mr. ___ hid Nettie’s letters rather than destroying them because since he still had feelings for her then he wanted to keep a part of her to remember her by. I think that this says that Mr.___ is not like everyman that acts like he does not care about other people, like Alphonso, but rather that they care but don’t try to show it off, for everyone to notice.
    7) A part of the book that haunts me is when ever Celie goes into much detail about the events that she is going through, for example at the beginning of the book when she is describing how she is getting raped and when Shug and Celie “discover” their body. I just think it is too much information to read, on a book like this.

  9. Dolores Flores;
    4. Sophia plays the odd ball of woman in the book. She does stubborn, strong and doesn’t take orders for men especially when he’s going to try to hit her into doing it. She shows that there are some women that aren’t afraid to take a stand for themselves and their children. Women that don’t need men to survive.
    5. I think Mr._____ hid Nettie letters from Celie instead of destroying them because in some way he has a heart. I think at some point he planned to give them to Celie, because if he didn’t he would of just thrown them away instead of storing them for such a long time.
    6. This book is believable to me, because is shows things that could easily happen to people. Rape and beating were every common thing’s that mean did to woman of all ages back then. Believability is important in a “real-life” story because if it something that you know is impossible to believe you know its not “real-life”.
