    2. Celie has always been treated badly by the men in her life. Because of that she doesn’t like men in any way. This is why she turns to her girl friends for comfort. Nettie is her sister and loves her dearly. Celie protects Nettie because she was the only person who cared about her. Then Celie finds friendship with Sofia. They can talk about the men in their lives and can relate to each other. And Celie finds love with Shug. Shug lets her talk and listens to her opinions. Celie realizes that women are better strong points in her life then men.

    2. The reason I think Celie prefers women in general is because they’re the ones she can most relate to and feel more comfortable being around. Celie doesn’t see men the same way because she’s been treated wrong by her stepdad and her husband. She’s been raped, told she can’t do anything, told she’s ugly, abused, and told she’s worthless and so I think that because she’s had these things happen to her, her fright for them is also hatred. When she started to get to know Sofia, they became friends because she felt that Sofia understood her and felt bad for her. This showed her she cared about her and that her intentions were to help her. Then she got to know Shug better and Shug showed her the intimate affection she liked and had never experienced before. I think that what’s on her mind is that women are more like her as the way she sees things and the way they understand her.

  4. 2) Something that could be going on in Celie’s mind is that men will always treat her wrong for the rest of her life, since they already did so when she was younger, that is why she prefers to turn to woman. Reasons she would rather turn to women are that they are more like her, they can relate to her and she builds strong bonds with them. Someone that Celie can relate to is her sister Nettie, although she has not seen to her, she still feels that sense that her sister is always there with her. At the beginning Sofia and Celie were not very close especially after Celie had told Harpo to hit Sofia, later when Sofia had a talk with her and told her she had to stand up for herself a bond grew. The person I think that most impacted Celie was Shug because she helped her and listened to her problems, Shug also gave Celie some sexual desire that she had not experienced before.

  5. 1) I think that males in the story both break and influence the woman in the novel. Men break the woman especially Celie because she is raped and beat by both Mr.___ and her Pa. The woman may seem to be controlled by the men in a way. They also influence them because they push the women to stand up for themselves like Squeak, she moved up to the north to be a singer, Celie did not want to be bossed around by men anymore and she decided to make another start in the north as well. Sofia, although she was already a strong woman she became even stronger by not letting Harpo push her around.

  6. 5) I think that it is important that Nettie returned at the end of the story because Nettie was the first person that was always there for Celie, and although they did not know anything about each other for a long time, the discovery of the letters seemed to unite them again, and there was also the promise that Nettie would return with both of Celie’s kids, both Olivia and Adam. It is also important that Nettie gets to see all of the people that have helped influence her sister to the person she is at the end of the book.

  7. Dolores Flores;
    1. The male characters that are in this novel do change over time due to the female influences they have in their lives. Three men that show this are Albert, Harpo and Adam. Albert stops beating Celie because Shug said did everything possible to make sure he was never going to hurt her again. Harpo tried to beat Sophia into doing everything he said. But since Sophia doesn’t get pushed around easily she finally got fed up with having to fight back and left to her sister Odessa’s. When Harpo realized she had left him he was upset. From the day she came back to be with him he didn’t even try to beat her. Harpo noticed he could have just asked and let Sophia say her remarks. Adam was against the scarification. But when Tashi told him her fear of being rejected in America because of her scars he went of and got identical ones. Just to reassure her that he wasn’t going to leave her for anyone else. The men in this book have changed in some way for it being their way of dealing thing to their beliefs they did it to please some they love.
